One minute of video is worth 1.8 million words

Drone video isn’t just for Hollywood films or your favorite influencer’s YouTube channel.  For years real estate agents have turned to commercial real estate drone video to show off their listings. Drones have made eye-catching, high-quality videos more accessible and affordable for agents.

Like anything in the 21st century, technology only keeps getting better. That’s why hiring a professional drone videographer is key to being cost-efficient and getting drone shots for real estate that actually resonate with a buyer. These shots sell a lifestyle.
There’s plenty of research that tells us the psychology behind why high-quality video immediately piques interest and establishes trust. Marketing experts say one minute of video is worth 1.8 million words. Professionals understand the types of shots that will move potential buyers down the funnel. We’re sharing some of our favorites in this article.

The Reveal

This one allows us to show off the beautiful scenery surrounding Long Island homes, no matter the season. It incorporates wide views of the island before getting to the property. It creates anticipation for the viewer to see their potential home. Homebuyers in the area are drawn by the relaxing beaches and private acres of land. This shot immediately answers the question of what the island looks like, all ready checking an item off their list. Watch the beginning of this property video we shot for a better idea.

The Overhead

This one is from a bird’s eye view. The shot is similar to The Reveal in that it showcases surrounding land, but it keeps the home in focus to provide a view of what the property looks like from above. We like to get creative with this one. Pans from the beach to overhead or from the yard to overhead help tell the story of how the potential buyer can imagine relaxing nights out by the patio.

The Pan

This is a tough drone shot for real estate to achieve and the difficulty can depend on the property you’re shooting. It brings the video down to a more direct view of what a potential buyer, family member, friend, etc, would see when approaching an angle of the property. The shot pans slowly past the home and can be shot from any side of the house. It’s effective for showcasing curbside appeal. For many Long Island homes, it’s also great for showing the large depth and/or height.

The Buyer’s POV

Not all commercial real estate drone video is shot from up above. Like all marketing, it’s important to put yourself in the audience’s shoes. This a strong storytelling shot from the buyer’s perspective. It’s used in filmmaking to put the viewer in a first-person-like experience. Virtual tours may also utilize this type of video. If you can catch the Long Island property at sunset, it’s a magical view. We used this strategy in this property we shot. (pay attention at 1:20 for a buyer’s POV of the water)

Importance of Hiring an FAA Licensed Drone Operator

The importance of working with a professional is to 1) be sure you’re abiding by all the rules of the air and 2) utilize their expertise in what shots produce results. In 2016, the FAA made it a requirement for drone videographers flying for business to pass the Part 107 certification exam to acquire a license. Without one, you can face fines up to $10,000 from the FAA if you knowingly hire someone without this license. We dive more into what you need to know about hiring an FAA-licensed drone operator here.

Both commercial and residential properties can benefit from the use of aerial photography and videography, but the use and order of the shots we’ve mentioned may differ. A seasoned pilot can provide an agent with what they see fit to best show off the property. We’ve got your back on this one.
